As Costs Rise, ‘Lasova’ Marks One Year of Community Support
One year after opening its weekly Erev Shabbos distribution, Lasova’s Shabbos food program has become a welcome source of help for Crown Heights families facing the rising costs of making Shabbos.
Lasova, a Shabbos food distribution program in Crown Heights, marks one year of providing local families with a wide selection of fresh and prepared items to help supplement their Shabbos meals.
On Friday mornings in Crown Heights, while families are busy getting ready for Shabbos, tables at Eshel are filled with fresh produce, challah and breads, prepared salads and dips, pantry items, snacks, and other foods, arranged neatly where families can stop by and take home food for Shabbos in a dignified way.
The selection is not limited to one part of the meal, but helps supplement many of the items families need as they prepare for Shabbos.
The program comes as many Crown Heights families continue to feel the strain of rising expenses, from rent and groceries to tuition and everyday household costs. While the community is blessed with organizations that help families facing serious financial hardship, this initiative fills a different need as well, helping regular families who are not necessarily in crisis but can still use extra help with the high cost of making Shabbos.
For families preparing for Shabbos, the weekly distribution has become a practical Friday help.
As the initiative marks its first anniversary, organizers thanked the volunteers, donors, and all those who help make the weekly distribution possible, and said they look forward to continuing to expand the program for the benefit of Crown Heights families.
