This past Sunday, the Siyum of an extraordinary Sefer Torah was held in memory of R’ Uzi Brown OBM, a master Sofer whose dedication to Sofrus was unparalleled. Remarkably, R’ Uzi himself wrote the first third of this very Sefer Torah before his passing two years ago—at the same age, date, and hour as the Alter Rebbe!
A devoted Chossid of the Rebbe, R’ Uzi was an expert Sofer who meticulously wrote nearly 50 Sifrei Torah, thousands of Mezuzos, and hundreds of Tefillin throughout his 47-year career. Residing in Manchester, UK, he was a pillar of the local Jewish community, widely respected not only for his precision in writing but for his deep expertise in the intricate laws of Sofrus and served as a mentor to many aspiring Sofrim. Among his various Yechidus with the Rebbe, he received a Brocha to become an expert in the Alter Rebbe’s Hilchos Shabbos—living his entire life as a true Alter Rebbe Shulchan Oruch Yid.
The completion of the Sefer Torah’s final letters took place at his brother’s home, where people from near and far gathered to participate in this momentous occasion. A joyous procession and Hakofos followed, filling the streets with hundreds of people singing and dancing as the Torah was carried to Young Lubavitch Shul in Manchester. There, it will remain on loan until it moves to its permanent home at his son’s Chabad House in Liverpool.
During the Seudah, several speakers shared heartfelt reflections on R’ Uzi’s life and enduring legacy, celebrating his contributions to the world.
