50 Years Ago Today: The Rebbe Launched First Six Pesukim
50 years ago, on Rosh Chodesh Iyar 5736, the Rebbe launched the first six of what would later become “The Twelve Pesukim,” changing Jewish education forever. Today, they are being reintroduced like never before.
It all started at the Shabbos Mevorchim Iyar farbrengen when the Rebbe proclaimed that year as a year of Chinuch.
Then on Thursday night, Rosh Chodesh Iyar 5736, the Rebbe made another fabrengen in which he said: “One of the most powerful ways to tip the scale for oneself and for the entire world to the side of merit is through the principle of ‘From the mouths of babes and sucklings You have founded strength.’ In this way, the enemy and the avenger will be destroyed while they still exist only in potential, before they can emerge into actual reality.”
Therefore, the Rebbe proposed that one should include in the Mivtzoim campaigns, and especially in this campaign of Chinuch, young children and infants. Through this, there will be the fulfillment of “to destroy the enemy and the avenger” in the most complete way, as soon as possible, etc.
Children are natural educators, said the Rebbe; they naturally make friends with others their age, and when they learn something new, their first instinct is to run and share their exciting discovery with their friends. They also love boasting to their friends when they find out something that their friends didn’t know about, and this impulse, too, can be used for holiness.
All you have to do is have a talk with your children and explain to them that whenever they meet another child, whether at home, in school, or even in the street, they should influence them in Yiddishkeit. And this will motivate the competitive instincts in the other child, that he, too, should learn something new in Torah to share with his friends.
The Rebbe went on to propose six Torah passages that every child can understand and explain to his friends: two from Torah Shebichsav, two from Torah Shebal Peh, and two from Tanya.
The Rebbe then asked that those who are capable should gather together, wherever they are in the world, to write these Pesukim in their local language. They should also add other Pesukim and teachings of Chazal that contain this same theme.
Today, exactly 50 years later, that vision has reached a remarkable new milestone.
