War-Torn Ukraine Prepares Sweet Shavuos for Thousands

As Shavuos approaches under continued Russian attacks, Chabad of Ukraine, through JRNU, is preparing a massive holiday operation to bring the joy of Yom Tov to Jewish families and children in more than 50 communities across the country.

As Shavuos approaches under continued Russian attacks, Chabad of Ukraine, through JRNU, is preparing a massive holiday operation to bring the joy of Yom Tov to Jewish families and children in more than 50 communities across the country.

The preparations come amid a tense and dangerous security reality, with recent deadly attacks in Kyiv that left dozens injured and powerful explosions heard in Dnipro and other cities, reminding residents that danger remains part of daily life. Despite the ongoing war, shluchim and rabbonim across Ukraine are determined to ensure that Jewish families can celebrate Shavuos with dignity, warmth, and a taste of sweetness.

As part of the effort, local production lines were specially prepared to produce tens of thousands of kosher ice creams and dairy products under leading local brands. The products will be distributed across more than 50 Jewish communities, allowing families to observe the Shavuos custom of eating dairy foods even amid the hardships of war.

Alongside the ice cream distribution, Chabad of Ukraine is also distributing large Yom Tov food packages filled with dairy products, including fresh milk, fruit yogurts, cream, cream cheeses, mozzarella cheese, and other items. The packages are intended to help families celebrate Yom Tov properly despite the financial strain and instability caused by the war.

The dairy products were produced under the mehudar supervision of the Ukraine Kashrus Committee, under the direction of Rabbi Pinchas Vishedski, one of the rabbonim of Kyiv. Rabbi Yehoshua Vishedski, who has directed the “Ukr-Kosher” kashrus system in Ukraine for years, noted that producing cholov Yisroel in Ukraine has long involved significant challenges, which have only grown more complex during wartime.

At the center of the Shavuos activities will be dozens of gatherings for the reading of the Aseres Hadibros, in keeping with the Rebbe’s instruction that every Jewish man, woman, and child, especially children, should hear the Aseres Hadibros on Shavuos. Special children’s programs and parties will also be held in communities throughout the country.

“Our goal is to give the children and Jewish families here a little sweetness for Shavuos,” one shliach in Kyiv said. “People here are going through something unimaginable. Explosions and attacks have become part of daily life, but we are not giving up on a single child or a single family.”

Chabad of Ukraine, through JRNU, said the distribution of food packages and ice cream will continue today and tomorrow in a coordinated effort to ensure that every Jewish family reached by the network will be able to sit down to Yom Tov with the feeling of Shavuos joy and tradition.
