There’s a Chabad Minhag We Seem to Have Forgotten

Pick almost any date on the calendar, and most of us can name the Chabad customs connected to it. But one minhag seems to have slipped through the cracks.

The topic of “Chabad minhagim” always generates lively discussion and hearty debate. What exactly counts as a Chabad custom? Who sets the standard? And how far must one go to observe it?

On one thing, however, everyone agrees: The minhagim recorded in the official record of Chabad customs, Sefer HaMinhagim Chabad, are official Chabad customs, sanctioned by the Rebbe and incumbent on Chassidim.

Sefer HaMinhagim contains just over 100 pages of customs, covering the daily cycle, the yearly cycle and the life cycle. Many of these customs are well known. But one seems to have escaped the collective consciousness.

In the minhagim of Yud-Beis Tammuz, Sefer HaMinhagim records the basic story of the day, the instruction not to say Tachanun, the custom to farbreng, and one additional minhag.

The minhag recorded there is not to wear a kapote. Sefer HaMinhagim does not say to visit the Ohel either, although both are undoubtedly meaningful things to do on such a day.

The minhag it does record is something else:

“On Yud-Beis Tammuz, the Rebbe would hold a magbis for the Oholei Yosef Yitzchok institutions.”

Let’s not forget that minhag this year.

The Oholei Yosef Yitzchok network of schools, established by the Rebbe in the name of the Frierdiker Rebbe, still exists today and continues to thrive and grow across Eretz Yisroel.

This year, on Yud-Beis Tammuz, let us remember the Chabad minhag for Yud-Beis Tammuz and take part in the Rebbe’s magbis for Reshet Oholei Yosef Yitzchok.
