In response to many questions about fasting on the upcoming fasts of Shiva Asar B’Tammus and Tisha B’Av, Beis Din Rabbonei Chabad in Eretz Yisroel issued a public ruling regarding the obligation to fast.

In a letter dated Yud Gimmel Tammuz, the Rabbonim wrote: “In response to many questioning regarding the fasts of Shiva Asar B’Tammus, each person should follow the guidelines of the Rov in his community.”

In general, after consulting with expert doctors, it is our opinion that:

A. Women who are pregnant or nursing are exempt from fasting.

B. Anyone who is sick, or has corona is exempt from fasting.

C. Patients with Chronic illness as well as those at-risk groups are exempt from fasting. If in doubt consult your personal doctor.

D. Those who are in isolation but are not sick, or those who are concerned, should consult with their personal physician, who knows their condition and can evaluate their level of medical risk and the level of exposure to the virus.
