Rabbi Mendy Raitport, a Crown Heights resident who for many years managed a butcher shop on Kingston Ave. and was involved in community service and political activism, passed away in a terrible car accident on Tuesday night, 25 Nissan.
Rabbi Mendy Raitport, a Crown Heights resident who for many years managed a butcher shop on Kingston Ave. and engaged in community service and political activism, passed away in a terrible car accident on Tuesday night, 25 Nissan.
He was 57 years old.
R’ Mendy was a familiar face in the neighborhood, having operated a popular butcher shop on Kingston Avenue for many years. In more recent years, he served as a menaker in various shechita operations.
Beyond his work in kashrus, R’ Mendy was known for his passion for improving the community, and he ran for office multiple times.
While returning home to New York after spending Pesach in Florida, he was sadly involved in a fatal car accident in Georgia.
He is survived by his wife, Esther, and 8 children.
He is also survived by his parents: Harav Yitzchok Raitport, a noted talmid chochom who heads Kolel Limetzuyanim in Boro Park, and Rebbetzin Shaindel Raitport.
He was predeceased by his brother Sholom Dovber Raitport.
