Mrs. Chaya Laine, who served for many years as a principal at Bais Rivkah High School, passed away on Tuesday night, 27 Elul.

She was 80 years old.

Mrs. Laine was born in a displaced persons camp after her parents, Rabbi Gutman and Mrs. Chana Baras, fled Lithuania during the war. Her father was from Rokiškis, where many residents had been drawn close to Lubavitch through the work of Rabbi Shmuel Levitin, who was sent there by the Rebbe Rashab. After arriving in Brooklyn in the 1950s, the family settled in Crown Heights and, following guidance from the Rebbe, later established a Jewish community in West Hempstead.

After teaching for several years at Beis Yaakov in Williamsburg, she started teaching at Bais Rivkah in 1979. In 1987, she became English principal of the high school until her retirement in 2020.

She is survived by her husband, Rabbi Eliezer Laine, and their children: Sara Jacks – Johannesburg, South Africa; Sholom Laine – Lauderhill, Florida; Levi Laine – Crown Heights; and Mendel Laine – Crown Heights.

She was predeceased by her son, Peretz Laine, AH.

She is also survived by her siblings, Rabbi Binyomin Baras, Mrs. Raizel Shmueli, Rabbi Sholom Baras, and Mrs. Faige Laine, all of Crown Heights.

The levaya will take place on Thursday. Details will follow.
