Mrs. Chana Scharf, a devoted Chassidishe woman from Crown Heights, whose children the Rebbe took a personal interest in after her husband’s passing, passed away on Thursday, 9 Sivan.

She was 67 years old.

Mrs. Scharf, a”h, was the wife of R’ Avrohom Shlomo Scharf a”h, who passed away after a brief illness in the month of Tishrei, 5750, in his early thirties. Following his untimely passing, the Rebbe showered extraordinary kiruvim upon the young widow and her children.

One memorable moment that stood out took place when her youngest son, Sholomke, turned three and was brought for his upsherenish. Mrs. Scharf brought scissors to the Sunday dollars line, hoping the Rebbe would participate in the chalakah. To the surprise of all present, when her turn arrived, the Rebbe turned to his secretary, who promptly handed him a pair of scissors that had been prepared in advance at the Rebbe’s instruction.

In the years following Gimmel Tammuz, Mrs. Scharf a”h remained deeply connected to the Rebbe. She would visit the Ohel frequently, and in recent years, she would come every Shabbos and Yom Tov. She was often seen standing in heartfelt davening at the Rebbe’s tziyun for extended hours, including during the long tefillos of the Yamim Nora’im.

She is survived by her children: Mrs. Rochel Tenenbaum – Shlucha in Destin, Florida; Rabbi Menachem Mendel Scharf – Mashpia in the Yeshiva in Detroit; Rabbi Shmuel Chaim Scharf – Mashpia in the Yeshiva in Chicago; and Rabbi Shalom Dovber Scharf – Mashpia in the Yeshiva in Chicago.

She is also survived by her brother, R’ Yossi Blumenfeld of Crown Heights.

The levaya will take place today, Thursday, at 3:30 PM, passing by 770 before continuing to kevura near the Ohel at 4:30 PM.

  2. My name is Chaya Landerer . I had the zechus to know Mrs. Scharf for only a few years! She was a true Tzadekes and a Malka! She was only worried about others, never about herself and brought about Yeshuos for so many! I was even zoche to make a beautiful Shidduch together with her! When I was going through a very difficult and challenging time she was there for me always- more than a sister. Always with a kind word and an encouraging vort. I am having a hard time believing that she is no longer with us! I loved her and miss her so much!

She should be a Meilitz Yeshoroh for her amazing family as well as all klal Yisroel.
