Mrs. Chana Popack, a dedicated leader of the women’s N’shei Chabad organization in Crown Heights for many years, passed away on Friday, 11 Elul, 5784.
She was 97 years old.
Originally a Teleshevsky, Mrs. Popack was born in Moscow to Rabbi Mordechai Dov and Chaya Sara Teleshevsky, chassidim of the Frierdiker Rebbe. Her family escaped to Riga, Latvia, and then eventually to the United States, in 1946.
When she arrived, the Rebbe sent her on shlichus to teach in Buffalo, NY where she met and married her husband Rabbi Aaron Popack. The couple remained on shlichus in Buffalo for two years and then transferred to Brooklyn to run Bais Rivkah. They were sent on multiple missions over the next years until the Rebbe sent them to Philadelphia in 1953 where they served for many years.
After her husband’s passing in 1977, Mrs. Popack moved back to Crown Heights where she was actively involved in the N’shei Chabad organization.
She is survived by her four children, Rabbi Mendel Popack and his wife Avigail, head shluchim to Capetown, South Africa; Mrs. Mashi and her husband Rabbi Mendel Lipskar, head shluchim to Southern Africa; Mrs. Dina and her husband Rabbi Sholom Ber Groner, shluchim in Johannesburg; Mrs. Rivkie and her husband Rabbi Yossi Yarmush, shluchim in Toronto; as well as dozens of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
The Levaya will pass 770 and continue on to the Old Montefiore cemetery.
