Chief Rabbi of Tehran Rabbi Yehuda Gerami read the Megillah at the kever of Mordechai and Esther in Hamadan, Iran.

Earlier this week Rabbi Gerami ruled that the Jewish communities in Iran not to fast on Taanis Esther due to pikuach nefesh. The outbreak of the coronavirus in Iran is the deadliest outside China.

There is a custom among Iranian Jews to gather at the kever and read the Megillah with a large crowd. However, with the spread of the deadly coronavirus, the Kever was seen empty, with only the chief Rabbi present.

Earlier this month, an unconfirmed report stated that Iranian regime had threatened to destroy the kever, and convert the site to “a consular office for Palestine.”

There is a competing tradition which identifies the traditional burial place of Queen Esther and Mordechai as being on the outskirts of the village of Baram, in the upper Galilee, near Tzfat.
