Mother’s Car Stolen During Camp Pickup

A silver Honda Odyssey was stolen outside Beth Rivkah Day Camp during pickup Wednesday afternoon, after another car pulled up behind it and a thief drove off within minutes.

A silver Honda Odyssey was stolen outside Beth Rivkah Day Camp at Brooklyn Avenue and Lefferts Avenue on Wednesday afternoon, in a theft that unfolded within minutes during camp pickup.

Community activist Yaakov Behrman reported that a mother had pulled up to pick up her children after camp, removed her infant from the car, and stepped away while the vehicle was still running. She had taken the keys with her and gone to bring out her other children.

“Within minutes, another car pulled up behind her van. A man jumped out and stole the van,” Behrman wrote.

The mother immediately ran to Shomrim, who were in the area. Shomrim checked nearby cameras and worked with the NYPD’s 71st Precinct as they followed the case.

The suspects who arrived in the other vehicle were arrested, and both have extensive criminal records, Behrman reported. The stolen Honda Odyssey and the driver who fled with it have not yet been found.

“These appear to be experienced car thieves,” he wrote.

The theft comes as car theft remains a steady concern in Crown Heights. The latest NYPD CompStat report for the 71st Precinct recorded eight stolen vehicles over the most recent 28-day period, and 39 so far this year.

Shomrim later issued a BOLO alert asking anyone who sees the silver Honda Odyssey to call 911 and Shomrim at 718-774-3333.

Behrman urged parents to learn from the incident, warning: “Never leave a child in a car alone, even for a moment.” He also reminded parents to turn off their vehicle, stay aware of their surroundings, and remember that “situations like this can unfold in seconds.”
