Lubavitcher Yehuda Shaffer has announced his candidacy for New York City Council in District 41, which includes Remsen Village, Brownsville, and parts of Crown Heights and East Flatbush.
Born and raised in Crown Heights, Shaffer understands both the unique challenges and the vibrant spirit of New York City’s most populous borough. For the past 12 years, he has served in Hatzala, responding to emergencies across the city. He believes that strong, resilient neighborhoods require accessible healthcare, safe streets, and equitable opportunities for all.
With these neighborhoods experiencing exponential growth in recent years with hundreds of new Lubavitcher families, the time has come to strengthen these communities and amplify the voice of Anash by electing one of our own to public office.
In a letter to the community, Shaffer writes:
Dear Members of Anash residing in District 41,
If recent events have taught us anything, it’s that we cannot rely on others to stand up for us—we must stand up for ourselves. Many in our community have expressed disappointment with the response—or lack thereof—from local politicians to the recent public threats made against us.
Our askonim work tirelessly, often behind the scenes, to protect our safety and ensure we are not forgotten. But there are times when a public response is necessary—to express our dissatisfaction and to remind both our allies and our adversaries that when we feel threatened or ignored, we will rise.
That is why I am standing up now—to make that statement. By electing one of our own to city government, we amplify our voice and make it clear that we will not be neglected or scapegoated for others’ frustrations.
I am running for City Council in District 41, a district that has seen exponential growth in recent years. My goal is to improve the lives of all its residents—because no community can be secure or thrive at the expense of its neighbors. Only by strengthening both our community and those around us can we enjoy the peace and stability this great city offers.
But I cannot do this alone—I need your help.
First, to appear on the ballot, I must collect hundreds of signatures from registered voters in District 41. Please ensure you are registered in this district and reach out so we can arrange to collect your signature.
Second, I need your help raising funds for this campaign. Our short-term fundraising goal is \$5,000. Every contribution counts.
Third, help spread the word. Talk to your neighbors about why signing my petition matters and why they should support this campaign.
Fourth and most importantly, I need your vote.
The odds may be stacked against us, but that should only strengthen our resolve. With your help, we can make a real difference—and we can win.
