7-year-old Chavi* knows all the nekudos but makes many mistakes when reading word practice sheets.
8-year-old Dovid* did well in Pre 1 A and 1st grade, but as his classmates increase their reading from the Siddur or Tehillim, his interest is declining and he’s starting to hate reading.
10-year-old Liba* seems to know Kriah, but makes many mistakes when reading pesukim or tires quickly from reading.
There are a variety of issues that cause students to struggle with Kriah. Though basic reading rules apply to all, every student’s brain is different. Learning to understand the child’s mind, what drives them, what hinders their progress, and how to best work with them will set you up for success.
