Rabbi Raleigh Resnick, shliach of Tri-Valley, CA, enlivens hundreds of Jews in the region. But now, he’s giving life to a community member in a very literal way.
Paul, a 47-year-old local Jew, had been suffering from end-stage renal disease for five years. He was undergoing frequent dialysis and was restricted to a specific diet, with a grim prognosis from his doctors.
After several volunteers were found unsuitable for donation, Rabbi Resnick decided to donate his kidney. Since he wasn’t a direct match for Paul, he participated in a kidney swap at UCSF Medical Center, facilitated by a sophisticated program designed for such situations.
To prepare for the donation, Rabbi Resnick sought support from Renewal, an organization dedicated to assisting Jews with kidney donation. Renewal helped ease the process with guidance, meals, and transportation.
His example has had a profound impact on his community, and Rabbi Resnick hopes this story will inspire others to care for one another. “Whenever someone feels their life lacks purpose, I suggest they consider saving a life through kidney donation.”
