Watch: Panorama of Halacha

Anash.org feature: A weekly shiur by Dayan Levi Yitzchok Raskin, Rov of Anash in London, explores interesting Torah questions and halachic dilemmas.

The following issues are discussed by Rabbi Raskin in this week’s episode:

  1. No one but the king is permitted to sit in the inner courtyard of the Beis haMikdosh. So did the Kohanim eat the sacrificial meat whilst standing? [1]
  2. Is one permitted to say ‘G-d’ within a joke? [2]
  3. In order to avoid Bishul Akum, is it enough that the pilot light was lit by a Jew? [3]
  4. Children shaped cookies, after which a non-Jew lit the oven and baked them: [4]
  5. When serving hot food on Shabbos, we normally first remove the pot from the blech. [5] What if a Goy is serving, do the same rules apply? [6]
  6. Quoting part of a Posuk on packaging, is that permitted? [7]
  7. One doesn’t greet an Ovel ר”ל with “Shalom”.[8] Is embracing allowed? [9]
  8. I place coins in a Pushka: does that mean that that amount of money must go to צדקה, or that I need to give that much? In practical terms: May I exchange cash with a charity voucher? The Tzedoko receives the same amount, but it costs me less. So, should I add to what was in the Pushka to cover for the Gift Aid?
  9. If going to Shul on Motzei Shabbos, should one wear Shabbos clothes? [10]
  10. I am an Assistant Rabbi in a Shul which begins Shabbos early. My Bar Mitzvah boys prefer to go to a local (Chabad) Shul where Kabbolas Shabbos is later. Are they – and my wife – bound to accept Shabbos early because of me? [11]
