Watch: Panorama of Halacha

Anash.org feature: A weekly shiur by Dayan Levi Yitzchok Raskin, Rov of Anash in London, explores interesting Torah questions and halachic dilemmas.

The following issues are discussed by Rabbi Raskin in this week’s episode:

  1. Rebbi Akiva: A gilgul of Zimri and of Shimon ben Yaakov; and who was a gilgul of Kozbi? [1]
  2. I saw a version of ידיד נפש that read והיתה לה שפחת עולם. Was that a simple printer’s error? [2]
  3. Following on from the ruling that the brocho for deep-fried bread-croutons is Mezonos, what is the brocho for Matzoh Brei (fried pieces of Matzo)? [3]
  4. In order to discourage the development of a cataract, my optometrist advised me to wear sunglasses. May I wear these in the street on Shabbos? [4]
  5. The Alter Rebbe advises modifying blankets so they shouldn’t have four corners, which would warrant adding Tzitzis. This is not widely followed amongst Chassidim. Why not? [5]
  6. A Jewish woman whom we know, married to a non-Jew, has decided to have her toddler circumcised – by a non-Jewish surgeon. She has invited me to be present for the procedure. Is there any purpose in my attending? I am also concerned about setting a precedent to use a non-Jew for circumcisions. [6]
  7. I lent a substantial amount to another Shliach, for a six-month period. This was from my building fund. To date, I have received very little repayment. I am now ready to go ahead with a new building, and I need those funds. I am anxious about pressuring the borrower to pay promptly in full, in case he truly doesn’t have the means to pay. Do I need to make that consideration? [7]
  8. May one buy a box of Israeli dates to give as a gift to a non-Jew? [8]

We appreciate your feedback. If you have any additional information to contribute to this article, it will be added below.

  1. 1) regarding Rabbi Akiva & the Seder Hadoirois – Doesn’t it say somewhere in the Talmud
מבני בנים של סיסרא למדו תורה בבני ברק
    – קאי על רבי עקיבא.
How can that be reconciled with the Seder Hadoirois ?
    Did Sisero come from Aisov?
    2) concerning matzo Brie fried.
For it to be palatable the Matzo needs a Nice amount of egg !
Or even another liquid if it is not made on Pesach. And therefore it is taken out of the sofek-doubt.
    Thank you for your Shiurim.
