Initiatives to increase the study of Likkutei Sichos were launched and dedicated to the memory of Eli Kay hy”d, who was murdered in a terror attack near the Kosel on Sunday.

According to reports, Eli had been walking in Yerushalayim on his way to the Kosel, holding tefillin and a volume of the Rebbe’s Likkutei Sichos, when an Arab terrorist opened fire, killing him and wounding four others.

Eli, who made aliya from Johannesburg about six years ago had learned at the Rabbinical College of Australia and New Zealand as a bochur and later in Tomchei Temimim Kiryat Gat. After Yeshiva, he served as a combat fighter in the Paratrooper’s Brigade, a platoon commander, and a platoon sergeant in the brigade’s training base.

In tribute to his life, and to his final moments when he was killed al kiddush Hashem while clutching a Likkutei Sichos, a new initiative was launched to study the sefer. A group of bochurim created a spreadsheet to divide up all the sichos of Likkutei Sichos on every parsha, with chassidim from around the world selecting a sicha to learn l’ilui nishmaso. The plan was to have each one of the approximately 30 sichos studied once, but the sichos were divided so fast that a second division was made, with a third following shortly after.

Organizers told Anash.org that they plan on streamlining the division, making it possible for anyone to participate, and having each sicha studied many times over.

In addition to the new initiative, one existing project dedicated the week of study to Eli as well. Project Likkutei Sichos, which launched just under three years ago, has thousands of participants who are on track to complete the entire Likkutei Sichos over eight years. Participants in PLS study a set number of sichos per week, and the website supplies tens of resources, shiurim and study guides per week. All of the study of Project Likkutei Sichos for this week, were dedicated the week of study to Eli hy”d, saluting the kiddush Hashem he made throughout his life, and his ultimate sacrifice of being killed for being a Yid, while walking to daven with a holy sefer in his hand.
