Rebbe’s Father’s Country Set to Join the Abraham Accords

Five years after President Donald Trump recognized the kever of the Rebbe’s father, Harav Levi Yitzchak in Almaty, as a national heritage site – ensuring its preservation in the Muslim-majority nation – Kazakhstan is set to join the Abraham Accords, becoming the fifth country to formally join the framework.

U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff announced that another nation is set to join the Abraham Accords, the U.S.-brokered agreements that normalized relations between Israel and several Arab states, with the official announcement expected Thursday night.

While Witkoff did not name the country, U.S. officials told Axios that Kazakhstan’s President will declare his nation’s intention to join the accords during a meeting with President Donald Trump on Thursday.

If confirmed, Kazakhstan would become the fifth country to formally join the framework, following the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Morocco, and Sudan.

“This is going to show that the Abraham Accords is a club that many countries want to be a member of,” an insider familiar with the talks said. “It will be a step for turning the page on the war in Gaza and moving forward towards more peace and cooperation in the region.”

This dramatic development comes five years after U.S. President Donald Trump officially recognized the burial site of the Rebbe’s father, Harav Levi Yitzchak Schneerson, whose kever is located in Almaty, the capital of Kazakhstan. The site was designated as a legally protected national heritage site – ensuring its preservation for generations to come – in a Muslim-majority Central Asian nation.

On Chof Av 5780 (2020), a special White House envoy, Mr. Paul Packer, traveled from Washington on behalf of the Trump administration to deliver the proclamation, leading a delegation of 250 Chabad rabbis. The event had been coordinated in advance with the President of Kazakhstan, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, and marked a historic moment of religious and diplomatic recognition.

Paul Packer serves as Chairman of the U.S. Commission for the Preservation of America’s Heritage Abroad, the federal office charged with safeguarding sacred sites of all faiths. His efforts helped secure the international recognition of this holy site, reflecting a deep respect for Jewish heritage within Kazakhstan’s government and further strengthening the nation’s ties with the global Jewish community.

Kazakhstan’s President is scheduled to meet with President Donald Trump at the White House on Thursday during a summit of Central Asian leaders. The two are expected to hold a joint call with Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu to announce Kazakhstan’s entry into the Abraham Accords. Reports indicate that Trump hopes to host a formal signing ceremony in Washington in the coming weeks.
