Recent excavation work done near the ohel of Harav Levi Yitzchak of Berdichev, has revealed the original matzeivah of Rav Levi Yitzchak and those of his three sons.

As coronavirus forced international travel to a halt, Shliach to Berditchev Rabbi Moshe Thaler used the opportunity to do necessary construction work to the area around the kever and other parts of the Jewish cemetery.

The work included plans to removed the floor and install an underground heating system. The system was necessary for the many visitors who come during Ukraine’s extremely cold winters.

Once the concrete floor was lifted, the incredible discovery was made.

First, the top of the original ohel walls were discovered. That led to further excavation around the walls, revealing four Kevarim that are attached one to another. The original Kevarim are some distance from what was thought to be the actual location of the Kevarim.

The four Kevarim belong to Harav Levi Yitzchak and his three sons. Following the passing of his oldest son Meir at a young age, the Alter Rebbe wrote Harav Levi Yitzchak a letter of consolation (Iggeres Hakodesh 28), where he explains how the passing of a tzaddik atones for the sins of the generations.

  1. i was there last year and outside the ohel behind it there were some new matzevahs on a platform. we went to visit the shluchim and they told us that those were the real kevarim NOT the ones inside the ohel.
now it seems that the matzevas are inside the ohel just further away from the original spot.
apparently this was to confuse the nazis or the communists.
