Nose-Rings Nowadays Considered Chukos Hagoyim? feature: Dayan Levi Yitzchok Raskin, Rov of Anash in London, explores interesting Torah questions and halachic dilemmas including a deaf person for a minyan, kohen transporting human organs, live-in keeping idols in her room, and are nose-rings chukos hagoyim.

The following issues are discussed by Rabbi Raskin in this week’s episode:

  1. We recently learned that Hashem tells Moshe Rabbenu to take with him the staff with which he had smitten the river. But wasn’t it the case that Aharon smote the river? [1]
  2. A man who is totally deaf, and is unable to speak coherently, but communicates efficiently via sign language as well as through texting – does he count for a minyan, for Chazaras haShatz and can we call him up to the Torah?[2]
  3. I am a Kohen and I work as a courier. May I transport human organs or skin?[3]
  4. May one lay Tefillin on a man after sunset on Friday evening?[4]
  5. We need to employ a live-in carer for a frail, elderly parent. A suitable candidate declared that she is a devout Catholic and she prays daily. Do we need to be concerned if she will bring any images into her room that is within our house?[5]
  6. Are piercings forbidden as Chukas haGoy? [6]
  7. From what age is it appropriate to say a brocho with Hashem’s name with a toddler? [7]
  8. Feedback on delayed Birkas haGomeil:[8]
  9. Feedback on butter and on baby milk that aren’t Cholov Yisroel: [9]
