New York State Senators Iwen Chu of Brooklyn, New York, Sean Ryan of Buffalo, and Jeremy Cooney of Rochester, visited Crown Heights, where they met with local askonim to discuss Jewish education, community safety, and home foreclosures among other topics.
A significant meeting took place in the Crown Heights Jewish Community Council (CHJCC) boardroom between prominent leaders in the Jewish community and several New York State senators, addressing the crucial topics of Jewish education, community safety, and the rising concern over private home foreclosures. The meeting aimed to strengthen the integrity of Jewish education and ensure the safety of New York’s diverse communities.
The delegation included State Senators Iwen Chu of Brooklyn, New York, Sean Ryan of Buffalo, and Jeremy Cooney of Rochester. They were joined by Rabbi Yoel Rosenfeld of Bobov, and Rabbi Yeruchim Silber of Agudas Yisrael of America. Representing Crown Heights Jewish Community Council (CHJCC) were Board Members Meir New and Dovid Halon, alongside Rabbis Eli Cohen and Chanina Sperlin.
The discussion centered on the importance of the State allowing communities to chart their own course in the education of their children and of safeguarding Jewish educational values and traditions. They also discussed initiatives to protect the security of Jewish communities, both through security grants and counter-terrorism measures to protect schools, and with regard to the effects of Criminal Justice Law on public safety.
In addition, the issue of private home foreclosures and potential solutions was a key topic on the agenda.
Following the meeting, the delegation visited United Lubavitcher Yeshiva (ULY), where they met with school leadership – Rabbis Yosef Simpson and Yossi Langzam, toured the newly renovated facilities, and engaged with students to discuss the importance of education in shaping future generations.
This meeting underscored the ongoing collaboration between community leaders and government officials to ensure the safety, security, and educational success of the Jewish community across New York State.
