[Continued from previous:] There are four categories: inanimate objects, vegetation, animals and humans. The human being is the highest and encompasses all others, as our Sages stated (end of Kidushin) “[each person ought to feel that] the entire world was created solely in order to serve me”. Within the category of mankind we say in davening, “You chose us from all nations”, as it says: “you will be a precious treasure to me” (Shemos 19:5), “He has chosen you out of all the nations” (Devorim 7:6, 14:2). The purpose of man, especially a Jew, is, in the words of our Sages “and I was created solely to serve my Master” (Talmud there).
