The original cemetery in the town of Lubavitch where “tzadikim nistarim” are known to be buried, was sadly used as a garbage dump for years. Now, it’s in the process of being restored.
The cemetery is the oldest cemetery in the town of Lubavitch, which was used for decades before the ‘new cemetery’, which later became famous for having the Ohel of the Tzemach Tzedek and Rebbe Maharash, started to be used.
The Frierdiker Rebbe mentions the cemetery in his memoirs, and writes that there are many ‘tzadikim nistarim‘ buried there.
This cemetery hasn’t been used for burials for over two hundred years, even prior to the town becoming the center of Chabad when the Mitteler Rebbe moved to Lubavitch following the passing of the Alter Rebbe.
Over many years, the exact location of the cemetery was forgotten. and later became a dumping grounds. The locals referred to it as ‘Trash Hill’ due to the large amount of trash accumulated there.
It was only through the intensive work and in-depth research headed by Shliach to Lubavitch Rabbi Gavriel Gordon that the location was rediscovered.
After the discovery, Rabbi Gordon worked to redeem the cemetery and recently succeeded in redeeming part of it. As the first step towards conserving the holy site, a fence was put up to protect and honor the cemetery.
Sponsoring the restoration, and the rehabilitation of all holy sites in Lubavitch were philanthropists Yossi and Batsheva Popak, with the help of the “Gader Avot” organization through the efforts of Rabbi Menachem Mendel Levin.
