Due to COVID-19 restrictions, Chabad Lubavitch of Southwest Florida, under the leadership of Shliach Rabbi Yitzchok Minkowicz, was unable to fulfill the custom of kaparos with chickens as in previous years. Instead, they used live fish.
“This year, with the challenges for kapparos around the world, many different solutions are being discussed. Some say do with fish, others with money, and a third option brought up was to appoint a shliach to do kapparos,” Rabbi Minkowitz told Anash.org. “However the shliach idea, while endorsed by many rabbonim, is not without controversy.”
“Our community, therefore, decided that our best option would be to use live fish, allowing us to keep to all restrictions and still be able to perform the tradition in a personal and meaningful way,” he said.
