Aid for Moroccan Community Set Up After Devastating Earthquake

In the aftermath of the deadly earthquake that wreaked havoc on Morocco, Chabad Rabbi Levi Banon traveled around the areas that were struck to survey the damage and aid the families there.

On Friday night, a 6.8 magnitude earthquake hit Marrakesh, Morocco, causing considerable damage to the old Jewish Quarter. Rabbi Levi Banon, shliach of Chabad of Casablanca, which is 150 miles north of Marrakech, traveled to the area to take stock of the damage and join in the aid efforts.

The death toll in the area mounted to over two thousand, r”l, with many homes destroyed and many others remaining uninhabitable for the time being. So far, there are no reported Jewish deaths, while all around the world, the Jewish communities are davening for the well being of their brethren in distress.

Chabad of Casablanca, led by Rabbi Levi and Chana Banon, is a two and a half hour drives way from the Jewish Quarter in Marrakech. Rabbi Banon has traveled to the area to help the Jews in need and see what needs to be done to assist those affected by the natural disaster.

They are working with the blessing of Mr. Serge Berdugo, who is the president of the Jewish communities of Morocco. The Jewish community is touched and overwhelmed by the outpouring of well wishes and help being sent from all over the world.

“We are so grateful to everyone reaching out to see how we are and if we need help,” said Rabbi Banon. “We have been in contact with the local communities who are in dire need of immediate relief. I am personally on the ground in Marrakech and the surrounding areas to see what needs to be done and to help out.”
