Rabbi Nochem and Rivkie Tenenboim, shluchim to Hewlett, NY, were celebrating the bar mitzvah of their son Yossi with hundreds of community members when they received a unique surprise.

As guests were enjoying their meal and many were wrapping Tefillin, Hempstead town officials took the stage and proudly presented the shluchim and bar mitzvah boy with a citation proclaiming the day “Yossi Tenenbaum Day” in the entire town, which includes the hamlet of Hewlett where the shluchim reside.

“Ours is the largest township in America and is bigger than 3 states,” Council Member Bruce Blakeman addressed the bar mitzvah boy before the enthusiastic crowd. “Supervisor Don Clavin created this citation just for you, Yossi, and he declared this day ‘Yossi Tenenboim Day’ in all of the Town of Hempstead.”

Town Supervisor Don Clavin added, “It is an honor for us to be invited here by your family. They are important to this community… and you are important to all of us here today. On behalf of the 720,000 residents of this community, we recognize you on this achievement.”

The night prior, the Tenenboim family held another celebration in Crown Heights in honor of the Bar MItzvah, attended by family and friends including Yossi’s grandparents, Rabbi Zev Katz, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Tenenboim, and the Rebbe’s secretary Rabbi Yehuda Krinsky.

Yossi reviewed the Bar Mitzvah ma’amar and made a siyum on Masechta Makkos. Rabbi Menachem Mendel Tenenboim shared an overview on the relationship between the Rogatchover and the Rebbe.
