In connection with Tefilas Tal, Anash.org presents a warm Yiddish song about the niggun B’Mashmeinu and the story that surrounds it.
In Tishrei 5659, the niggun was brought to Lubavitch and the Rashab asked for it to be sung many times. That year, many bochurim in Lubavitch were due to appear for the Russian army draft after Yom Tov. The Rebbe Rashab then told the bochurim, “If you give your ‘mashmaneinu,’ the fatty best and pleasure, for Torah and Mitzvos, I promise you that ‘al yehi razon,’ you will not go ‘hungry.’” He then added, “When you sing the nigun, think that you will be soldiers in Hashem’s army.”
During a farbrengen in 5722, the Rebbe asked for this niggun to be sung and then said, “The words of tzaddikim are everlasting. When the bochurim will dedicate their ‘mashmaneinu’ to learning Nigleh and Chassidus, and the baaleibatim will give their best for supporting Torah study, then they will have the Rebbeim’s promise that they will not be lacking.”
The lyrics were written at the Tzeirei Hatemimim summer program by Nyack Mashpia Rabbi Yosef Klyne, director of the program, and the music was recorded and sung by Habochur Meir Sasonkin.
