First Yahrzeit of Rabbi Sholom Hecht Marked by Family

Family and friends of Rabbi Sholom (Sidney) Hecht, marked his first yahrzeit with a seuda in his memory, and by visiting his gravesite in Old Montefiore Cemetery, near the Rebbe’s Ohel.

Family and friends of Rabbi Sholom (Sidney) Hecht, marked his first yahrzeit with a seuda in his memory, and by visiting his gravesite in Old Montefiore Cemetery, near the Rebbe’s Ohel.

The gathering took place on Thursday night, at the Sisu V’Simchu Hall in Boro Park. Family members and acquaintances related their memories of Reb Sholom, and his connection to the Rebbe.

Rabbi Yehoshua Hecht, shliach to Norwalk, CT, spoke of his uncle’s vitality, and how he inspired he touched the lives of thousands through his work as a Judaica salesman.

The family also gathered on Friday, at his kever in Old Montefiore Cemetery for the traditional tefillos and learning for a yahrzeit.

Sidney was born to his parents Reb Yehoshua and Sarah Hecht on Shushan Purim 5688/1928. He was the youngest of the famed Hecht brothers who later went on to become rabbonim and activists.

Sidney and his wife were childless for many years. He visited doctors and professors in the field, but to no avail.

During a farbrengen of 5718, between the sichos, the Rebbe suddenly called out to him, “Change your name from Sidney to Sholom, so that you may have peace in your body and soul, and you will have a healthy child!” Sydney became Sholom, and was blessed with a daughter within the year.

R’ Sholom merited to have a close connection with the Rebbe, and had permission to enter the Rebbe’s room whenever he so desired.
