Due due the crowding in Yerushalayim’s main cemetery, Har Hamenuchos, a new cemetery is being built – underground. It will contain 23,000 new graves along a mile of tunnels.
The concept of an underground cemetery is not a new one. The Mishna discusses a “Kuch” which is a cavity in the wall of a cave where they would bury their dead. In fact, one such cave, known as the “Cave of R. Yehuda Hachossid,” lies at the foot of Har Hazeisim and was used in 1700s.
