UK’s Chief Rabbi Makes Historic Visit to Cyprus

Chief Rabbi of Great Britain, Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis, was hosted in Cyprus by head shliach Rabbi Arie Zeev Raskin, where he met with the country’s leaders and laid the cornerstone for the new King David school building.

Larnaca, Cyprus had the esteemed honor of welcoming Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis, the revered religious leader and Chief Rabbi of the United Kingdom, for his first visit to Cyprus. The welcoming committee included Chief Rabbi of Cyprus, Rabbi Arie Zeev Raskin, and the Ambassador of Israel to Cyprus, Oren Anolik. The welcoming ceremony was held at the Jewish Museum of Cyprus.

Chief Rabbi Mirvis’s visit marks a significant occasion for the Jewish community in Cyprus and underscores the strong bonds between Cyprus and the United Kingdom. His presence not only fosters interfaith dialogue and cooperation but also symbolizes unity and mutual respect among communities.

Representing the municipality of Larnaca was Mr. Giorgos Lakkotrypis, welcoming Chief Rabbi Mirvis to this historic event. This is Chief Rabbi Mirvis’s first visit to Cyprus.

Rabbi Mirvis met with the President of the Republic, Mr. Nikos Christodoulidis, on the occasion of a ceremony organized by the Embassy of the State of Israel in Cyprus for the 75th anniversary of the closure of the British detention camps for Jewish Holocaust survivors in Karaolos, Dekelia and Xylotympou.

Earlier in the day, Rabbi Mirvis held a private meeting with the President of the House of Representatives, Mrs. Anita Dimitriou, and then met with the Archbishop of Cyprus, Mr. George, with whom he discussed issues concerning the religious freedoms of the members of the Jewish Community of Cyprus.
