Following a recent large event in Crown Heights where a product with Triangle-K certification was mistakenly distributed, the CHK Vaad HaKashrus issued a public statement clarifying its policy.

The CHK emphasized that, under the guidance of the Rabbonim of the Beis Din of Crown Heights, products bearing Triangle-K certification are deemed unreliable and are not acceptable. The decision reflects CHK’s kashrus protocols and commitment to ensuring that all products used in the community meet their established standards.

“In response to numerous inquiries we received, the Crown Heights Kashrus (CHK) wishes to inform the community about our policy regarding Triangle-K kashrus supervision.

“Products bearing Triangle-K certification are not considered acceptable under CHK standards, in accordance with common standards across Kashrus agencies.”

The incident generated considerable discussion on WhatsApp groups, with some rabbis reportedly downplaying the concern. In response, the CHK and Rabbi Nissan Zibbel of “Kashrus Be in the Know” confirmed the hechsher as problematic. Other rabbonim refrained from sharing their concerns publicly due to fear of retaliation.

Another product with this hechsher is Vintage flavored seltzer, sold at some Crown Heights stores. Since flavored seltzer contains ingredients requiring reliable supervision, a proper hechsher is essential.

COMMENTS

We appreciate your feedback. If you have any additional information to contribute to this article, it will be added below.

  1. Vintage seltzer is different most of the flavors are on the Star k and CRC list of kosher drinks so you can drink them without the need to rely on the triangle k

  2. Thank you for the comment above. Some may be on star k website , but not all flavors sold in CH are on that list 🙁
but… why use vintage when you have so many other options that are under a good hashgocha?

  3. There are also some canned goods bearing the triangle k that are sold in stores… make sure to look for reliable hechsher when shopping, don’t just think that because it’s sold that is ok.

  4. It is not just the CHK that does not recognize them. They are not members of AKO, which represents a minimal level of “American Kashrus.”

The triangle K has a number of policies that are not generally accepted in the Kashrus world.

  5. Both agencies only recommend 5 out of 10 flavors (Lemon and Lime counts as two).
    Not very comforting.
Add on the possibility of Vintage changing the flavoring without notifying *k and crc,
I’ll do without, as there are plenty of other certified flavored seltzers.
