The IDF is widely regarded as the most powerful military in the MidEast, and has emerged victorious over its foes time and again. Simultaneously, these victories have often been attributed to the realm of miracles. So, which is the true cause of its success?
The Israel Defense Forces is widely regarded as the single most powerful military in the Middle East, and among the most technologically advanced in the world. Utilizing their physical prowess, as well as their tactical genius, the army has time and again risen victorious over its foes. Simultaneously, these victories have often been allocated to the realm of miracles, attributed to the work of G-d. Our survival as a nation, throughout all of history, has utterly defied logic.
So, is our survival a product of military ingenuity and technological advancement, or are we simply a walking miracle? Furthermore, if the latter is the case, then why must we have an army at all?
At the farbrengen of Yud Tes Kislev 5734 (1973), two months after the outbreak of the Yom Kippur War, the Rebbe discussed at length the spiritual greatness and power of the IDF.
Herein lies the key to our continuity as a People. As finite beings on this earthly plane, our mission is to create a conduit for Divine intervention through natural efforts. The military is necessary and vital, as G-d desires that we seek to protect ourselves through natural means. However, at the same time, we must remember that the IDF is a Jewish army, thereby necessitating the use of our spiritual weapons, Torah and mitzvos.
The use of these weapons need not be shrouded in secrecy in order to generate success, unlike the employment of man-made weapons. The world may know what our strategy is, and yet they are incapable of preventing its effectiveness or utilizing it themselves. Whether we are in the IDF itself, or thousands of miles away from the war zone, as Jews, we can tap into this spiritual arsenal and dictate the course of this war – straight to our complete victory.
