The Tzedaka Fund Encouraged by the Rebbe for the New Year

In 5714, the Rebbe founded Keren Hashana, a fund that distributes tzedaka twice a day on your behalf. Throughout the years, during the month of Tishrei, the Rebbe would publicly encourage participation in this fund.

During Tishrei of 1953, the Rebbe founded a very innovative tzedaka fund, “Keren Hashana–the Fund for the Year.” The Rebbe explained that this fund would ensure that everyone give to charity every day of the year. The fund, which the Rebbe created under the aegis of Machne Israel, disburses tzedaka twice every day on behalf of all those that participate in the fund.

The Rebbe said that donations should be made on behalf of all members of the family in the amount matching the number of days of the year, 5783 has 355 days. (See Likkutei Sichos volume 2, page 651)

Dear Friend:

The Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson, of blessed memory, often spoke emphatically about the importance of the mitzvah of tzedaka and the virtue of giving tzedaka frequently.

Sixty-nine years ago, in 1953 (Tishrei 5714), the Rebbe established the Keren HaShana fund, under the aegis of the Machne Israel organization, to facilitate daily contributions to tzedaka on behalf of every individual contributing to this special fund. Twice each day, money is drawn from the contributions made to the fund, and given to various charities on behalf of all contributors. This practice continues to this very day.

In keeping with this tradition established by the Rebbe, we invite you to benefit from this unique tzedaka opportunity. With the approach of the New Year, when people customarily seek to increase their commitment to charity and helping and sharing with others, your generous contribution to Keren HaShana is a most appropriate expression of good resolve and charitable activity twice every day of the coming New Year.

Your contribution to Keren HaShana, in multiples of the days of the year, (the coming lunar year, 5783, has 355 days), assures you that no matter how preoccupied you are, no matter how rushed you may be, Keren HaShana is always there to draw upon your annual contribution, twice daily, and disburse the funds to one of the numerous social services and educational outreach activities of the world-wide Chabad-Lubavitch movement. So that you merit the mitzvah of giving tzedaka, at least twice every day of the year, Keren HaShana offers you this opportunity to do so.

The Rebbe suggested that it is appropriate to contribute to this fund on behalf of each member of your family, and for friends and loved ones too.

With warmest good wishes for a Ksiva v’Chasima Tova, l’Shana Tova u’Mesuka, may you and all your loved ones be blessed with a very happy, healthy and sweet New Year.

Very sincerely,

Rabbi Yehuda Krinsky
