The Maamer the Alter Rebbe Said to Celebrate His Release

In honor of 19 Kislev, Rabbi Avraham Katz has translated and explained a maamar the Alter Rebbe said on the first anniversary of his release from prison. Plus download all maamorim the Alter Rebbe said in connection with the day.

Everyone is accustomed to the idea that we learn a maamar on Yud Tes Kisleiv that is connected to that special day. The Rebbe would say a maamar every year in connection with Yud Tes Kisleiv, as did all the Rebbeim in most years of their Nesius.

What is less known is that the Alter Rebbe himself said maamarim on Yud Tes Kislev, and that many of these are printed and available to be learned.

Some of the reasons for this:

1. The maamarim that are printed in Likuttei Torah, or Siddur Im Dach, or Biurei HaZohar, were printed without any mention of their connection to Yud Tes Kislev.

2. Several maamarim were not printed until recently. Up until the 1980’s, most of the Alter Rebbe’s maamarim that are not in Likuttei Torah were simply not printed at all. The Rebbe initiated a campaign to print all of the maamarim of all of the Rebbeim, including the Alter Rebbe’s maamarim.

However, now that we have the majority of the Alter Rebbe’s maamarim in print, and we have printed the research of the source of most maamarim of when they were said, we have the ability to put together a collection of maamarim that the Alter Rebbe himself said for Yud Tes Kisleiv.

In honor of Yud Tes Kislev, Rabbi Avraham Katz has put together a collection of maamarim that the Alter Rebbe said for Yud Tes Kisleiv, compiled from the various sefarim where they are found. (Except for the maamarim that are printed in Likutei Torah that most people have already.) The text of the maamarim is copyright of Kehot Publication Society.

This compilation may not include every maamar, but it should be useful to anyone wanting to learn a Yud Tes Kisleiv maamar said by the Alter Rebbe himself.

In addition, Rabbi Katz has translated and explained one of the maamarim from this collection, a maamar the Alter Rebbe said י”ט כסלו תק”ס on the first anniversary of his release from prison on י”ט כסלו תקנ”ט , to make it accessible for anyone to learn and understand.
