Bais Chaya Mushka Elementary School, the Lubavitch girls’ school in Toronto, Canada, was targeted over Shabbos when two individuals fired multiple rounds at the building, causing minor damage. The incident occurred in the early hours of Shabbos morning, shortly before 5 a.m.

According to police reports, the suspects arrived at the school in a dark-colored vehicle and fired five shots at the building before fleeing the scene. People arriving at the school later that day noticed the damage and shell casings and promptly notified the authorities.

During a news conference held Shabbos afternoon, Inspector Paul Krawczyk of the guns and gangs task force confirmed that the suspects had fired shots at the school. The assailants immediately fled the scene after the incident.

The authorities were alerted to the situation around 9 a.m. on Shabbos when school staff reported evidence of a firearm discharge. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, although the front of the school sustained damage from the shooting.

Inspector Krawczyk emphasized that it is too early to determine whether the incident constitutes a hate crime or a terrorist act. “We’re not going to ignore the obvious, you know, what occurred here and what the target of the shooting was,” he stated. “But at the same time, it will be wrong to just guess at this point.”

Toronto police are actively searching for the suspects, with the guns and gangs task force leading the investigation. They are being supported by the force’s hate crime unit. Law enforcement officers have increased their presence in the vicinity near Dufferin Street and Finch Avenue W, conducting door-to-door inquiries and seeking information from local residents and businesses. Additionally, patrols around other schools and shuls in the area will be heightened as a precautionary measure.
