Rabbi Wiener Sets Record Straight on Beard Controversies

In response to numerous arguments and claims, both recent and old, raised in print media and widely circulated podcasts, Rabbi Moshe Wiener, expert on halachos of the beard, published a new publication to address them in a clear and organized manner.

Renowned author Rabbi Moshe Wiener has announced the publication of his new Hebrew-language sefer, L’ma’an Yeidu – Divrei Shalom Ve’Emes, offering a comprehensive and carefully documented response to recent public critiques and attacks directed at his earlier work.

His earlier work, Hadras Ponim Zokon, is an encyclopedic exploration of the Torah’s perspective on preserving the beard. Initially published in 5738 (1978) and now expanded to 1,227 pages, it was a groundbreaking work.

The sefer, held in great esteem by the Rebbe, has had a remarkable impact on countless readers. The Rebbe not only recognized its importance but was personally involved in guiding its preparation and printing.

In response to numerous arguments and claims, both recent and old, raised in print media and widely circulated podcasts, Rabbi Wiener authored L’ma’an Yeidu to address them in a clear and organized manner.

Drawing upon classical and contemporary halachic sources, as well as historical documentation, the sefer reaffirms the methodological foundations and conclusions presented in Hadras Ponim Zokon, while correcting mischaracterizations and factual inaccuracies that have entered the public discourse.

L’ma’an Yeidu was prepared in response to repeated requests from rabbanim, educators, and talmidei chachamim“, Rabbi Wiener shared. “They sought an organized, source-based response to claims made publicly without opportunity for proper scholarly exchange.”

Written in a dignified tone, the sefer seeks not polemics, but truth – “so that future generations may know” the authentic sources, context, and halachic framework surrounding the subject.

The sefer is intended for rabbanim, educators, researchers, and serious students of halacha and Jewish history, and serves as an important contribution to contemporary Torah literature, addressing the intersection of halacha, mesorah, and modern media discourse.

Among its notable sections are:

  • The authentic Lithuanian Torah tradition regarding beard growth and how Gedolei Torah related to grooming practices in pre-war Litvish yeshivos.
  • The halachic stance of leading authorities on modern shaving instruments, including electric shavers and depilatory agents.
  • Historical documentation of rabbinic opposition to shaving practices, both past and present.
  • Supplementary appendices reproducing rabbinic endorsements, letters, and halachic opinions from across the Torah world.

This new publication seeks not to introduce controversy but to clarify the Torah’s position, as expressed in the book’s subtitle: “A Collection of Responsa and Clarifications Addressing Recently Raised Challenges Regarding the Cutting and Growth of the Beard.”
