Rabbi Hershel Schachter Visits Chabad Yeshiva of Panama

The Chabad yeshiva “Kollel Torah” in Panama enjoyed a special visit from Harav Hershel Schachter, rosh yeshiva of YU’s Yeshivas RIETS (Rabeinu Yitzchok Elchanan), who delivered a shiur on the topic they were studying.

The talmidim of the yeshiva gedola “Kollel Torah” in Panama, had a special visitor last week, Harav Hershel Schachter, rosh yeshiva of YU’s Yeshivas RIETS (Rabeinu Yitzchok Elchanan).

Rabbi Schachter was welcomed by the talmidim-shluchim Yaakov Sudakewitz and Yaakov Berkowitz, rosh yeshiva Rabbi Menachem Mendel Shuchat, and the rav of the Ashkenazi community and head shliach Rabbi Ahron Leib Laine.

In the halacha seder, the talmidim of the yeshiva are learning the “Rav Kehilla” program of Lemaan Yilmedu and they are now involved in Hilchos Keria Ha’Torah. They had the opportunity to hear a deep shiur by Rabbi Schachter based on shiurim and practices that he received from his rebbi, Harav Yosef Dov Soloveitchik z’l. In his shiur, he discussed the correct way to read parshas Haazinu and the division of aliyos.

At the end of the shiur, Rabbi Shuchat shared a point from the Rebbe’s hadran on Megilla, which deals with Hilchos Kerias Ha’Torah. Rabbi Schachter was impressed by the talmidim’s knowledge and their learning program and urged them to give their all to the study of Gemara and Halacha.

Rabbi Shuchat noted something interesting. Thirty-five years ago, Rabbi Zushe Wilhelm a”h went on shlichus to Panama and was active in the Beit El shul. Today, thanks to the efforts of head shliach Rabbi Laine who developed the community and upgraded the beautiful Beit-El campus, twelve bachurim are learning the halacha program of Machon Lemaan Yilmedu which Rabbi Wilhelm directed. No doubt, this is providing his neshama with much nachas ruach, and may it be a zechus for him.
