Newly Discovered Letter Offers Timely Guidance on U.S.-Israel Tensions

Last week marked the lowest point in U.S.-Israel relations when the U.S. abstained from the U.N. Security Council vote for an immediate ceasefire in Israel. A newly discovered letter from the Rebbe, penned on the day after Shushan Purim 1980, offers timely guidance for navigating this challenge.

Last week marked the lowest point in U.S.-Israel relations since the start of Israel’s defensive war against Hamas on October 7, 2023. The U.N. Security Council voted for an immediate ceasefire and in an uncharacteristic move, the U.S. abstained from the vote, isolating Israel. However, a newly discovered letter from the Rebbe, penned on the day after Shushan Purim 1980, offers valuable insights into navigating such challenges.

This letter was translated and annotated by Sichos in English in connection with their upcoming “Make Peace.” under the Yonah Press imprint. It addresses a similar situation in 1980, when the U.S. voted in favor of a U.N. resolution condemning Israel. The Rebbe drew parallels to the Purim story, praising the Jewish people’s resolve to “gather together and stand up for their lives,” just as Mordechai stood strong against Haman.

The Rebbe emphasized the importance of unwavering Jewish pride and faith in the face of international pressure, even if it means reversing weak policy. He expressed deep concern for the safety of the Jewish people, lamenting concessions made in the name of “peace” that jeopardized lives.

As Israel faces pressure to end its vital defensive operation, the Rebbe’s words resonate strongly. The letter serves as a timely reminder of the power of Jewish unity and steadfastness, trusting that G-d will grant miracles to those who stand strong.

Make Peace.” offers a deeper exploration of the Rebbe’s insights into achieving true and lasting peace. This newly discovered letter is a testament to the enduring relevance of his wisdom in guiding the Jewish people through the challenges of our time. Sichos in English thanks Rabbi Elkanah Shmotkin of JEM for sharing the original Hebrew letter and for his wise insights on its contents and context.
