Family and friends gathered Sunday night for a seudah and evening of inspiration marking the one-year yahrzeit of Reb Mendel Okunov, and to begin writing a new Sefer Torah in his memory.

The gathering was addressed by Rabbi Yossi Paltiel and Rabbi Simon Jacobson who spoke about R’ Mendel and how he lived by example, showing all the ways of Chassidus, the embodiment of what it means to be a chosid.

Reb Mendel grew up in the Soviet Union, keeping mitzvos with great mesiras nefesh, and went on to be a major force in the F.R.E.E. organization. He passed away on Ta’anis Esther 5782.
