Mrs. Sara Raize Wolowik, a longtime active member of the Chabad community in Montreal and matriarch of a large Lubavitcher family, passed away on Thursday, 11 Iyar, 5782.
She was 77 years old.
Mrs. Wolowik was born to Rabbi Binyomin Hakohen and Machlli Fishman in Westerly, Rhode Island. She was raised in a home permeated with mesiras nefesh, as her parents were the only frum family in the neighborhood, and her mother had to make a long trip on dirt roads to reach a mikvah. Her parent’s mesiras nefesh continued when she was being raised as well, sending her to learn in Bais Yaakov in New York at the young age of 11.
While learning in Bais Yaakov, she met a number of Lubavitcher girls, and decided that she wanted to become a Lubavitcher herself.
After her marriage to Rabbi Leibel Wolowik, the couple moved to Montreal in the mid-60s. Mrs. Wolowik served as a teacher in Bais Rivkah of Montreal for a number of years, and served in the local Chevra Kadisha.
Friends and family remember her as generous and hospitable, always with an eye out to help another person. She was also dedicated to the Rebbe’s mivtzoim, and frequently went on mivtzoim herself, distributing Shabbos candles, matzah or other Yom Tov related items.
The family requests that her husband Rabbi Leibel Wolowik not be told about her passing.
She is survived by her husband, Rabbi Leibel Wolowik, and their children, Rabbi Yerachmiel Wolowik – Los Angeles, CA; Yitzchok Wolowik – New York/Florida; Rabbi Shneur Zalman Wolowik – Five Towns, NY; Rabbi Yosef Wolowik – Los Angeles, CA; Rabbi Avrohom Wolowik – Baltimore, MD; Mendel Wolowik – Crown Heights; Berel Wolowik – Long Island, NY; Henya Muller – Montreal, Canada; Shmuel Wolowik – Long Beach, CA; Machli Canterovitch – S.
