A winter storm warning is in effect for NYC, Long Island and parts of North Jersey, from 2 PM Wednesday to 1 PM Thursday. Heavy snow, with accumulations of 8-12 inches are expected, with winds gusting as high as 45 to 50 mph.

Snowfall amounts could be a bit lower than forecast along south coastal portions of the region if sleet mixes in Wednesday Night.

Travel is predicted to be difficult, with hazardous conditions impacting the morning or evening commute. Gusty winds and heavy wet snow are also expected bring down tree branches.

The public is cautioned to stay indoors during the storm, and if going out proves necessary, to do so with great caution. Following storms, hospitals see a high influx of patients suffering from heart attacks, brought on by shoveling snow.

When shoveling, make sure to take breaks and lift lighter loads. Do your best to stay dry as wet clothes make you lose body heat, increasing your risk of hypothermia.
