Exploring the laws and customs of Chuppah v’Kiddushin, the new Machon Smicha course offers everyone the chance to get educated on what really happens under the chuppah.

What is this new course?

Machon Smicha is launching an exciting new summer course – a primer on the laws and customs of Chuppah v’Kiddushin. The goal of the course is to study the halachos directly from the Shulchan Aruch and other sources, and then to apply that to the practical laws and customs of officiating at a wedding.

The course was developed by the Machon Smicha team, under the guidance of two experts in this field – Rabbi Yehoram Ulman of Sidney, and Rabbi Mordechai Farkash of Seattle, WA.

What is Machon Smicha?

Machon Smicha is an online program that, thanks to its unique curriculum, empowers and enables everyone to learn and master halachah. From the novice to the well-seasoned scholar, Machon Smicha offers all participants a structured program to grow and succeed in their Torah learning.

Who is it For?

This course is for everyone. The layperson watching the chuppah, the rabbi officiating at it, the chasan standing under it, or anybody in between, this course is for everyone.

Thanks to Machon Smicha’s innovative curriculum, this course can bring almost anyone up to speed, while offering a high level of learning of benefit to those who already officiate at weddings, or who are gearing up to do so.

What is being learnt?

The topics covered by the course are relevant as well as interesting, and are subdivided into four primary topics:

  1. Hilchos Yuchsin (The Laws of Genealogy) – Including topics such as who may marry whom, mamzerim, kohanim, and unknown familial ties.
  2. Hilchos Eidim  (The Laws of Witnesses) – Ensuring the halachic acceptability of the witnesses, exploring who may or may not serve as a witness, and their job at the wedding.
  3. Hilchos Kesubah (The Laws of a Kesubah) – The all-important marriage contract between husband and wife – what it is, and how to write a proper, kosher, one.
  4. Chuppah v’Kiddushin – The process of officiating at the actual wedding. This includes understanding all the steps of the chuppah ceremony, and what to do when.

What is being offered?

In this course, similar to the flagship smicha program, Machon Smicha offers participants:

  • Online portal with access to all the programs content.
  • Flexible schedule.
  • Shiurim.
  • English Study Guides containing introductions, overviews, translations, and in-depth summaries of every halachah.
  • Access to forums for questions, discussions, etc.
  • Rabbi and teachers available to answer questions and aid in the learning.
  • Quizzes, other review material, and mock tests.
  • Certificate for those who successfully complete the program.

Additionally, Rabbis Ulman and Farkash will deliver shiurim throughout the course, drawing from their wealth of knowledge and insight, both halachic and practical, and sharing that with the paricipants.

The course is ten weeks, from 22 June (12 Tammuz) until 31 August (23 Elul).
