Live: Berlin Mayor Joins Menorah Lighting at Brandenburg Gate

Live: A grand menorah lighting is taking place at the historic Brandenburg Gate, with a record number of dignitaries attending this year in light of the rise in antisemitism, including Berlin’s Mayor, Kai Wegner, who has set aside his usual winter vacation to give his full attention to the Jewish community.

In a short time, Berlin will host a grand menorah lighting at the Brandenburg Gate, a site that once stood as a symbol of the Nazi rise during the outbreak of World War II.

The giant menorah, positioned prominently at this historic location, is one of fifty menorahs placed throughout the city by the Shluchim of Germany.

The menorah at the Brandenburg Gate, the largest in Europe, stands as a powerful testimony to the triumph of the Jewish people over the darkness of Nazi oppression. This year marks the 19th consecutive lighting at this location, led by Rabbi Yehuda Teichtal, Shliach and Chief Rabbi of Berlin.

The highlight of tonight’s event will be the participation of Berlin’s Mayor, Kai Wegner, who has graciously set aside his annual vacation to attend this significant occasion. Thousands of Jewish residents, alongside dignitaries and key figures, are expected to join in the lighting of this remarkable menorah.

“This year, perhaps more than ever, it is of utmost importance to kindle the Chanukah lights, which have the power to dispel even the greatest darkness,” Rabbi Teichtal expressed to the gathering of journalists already present at the scene. He added, “This year, we have added many more menorahs, with heartfelt hopes and prayers to banish the darkness forever.”
