Las Vegas paid a unique tribute to Rabbi Shea and Dina Harlig, head shluchim of Southern Nevada and their family, with a declaration proclaiming August 2nd 2023 – 15 Av 5783 as “Harlig Family Day” in the city.
Established in 1990 in the Harlig’s living room, Chabad of Southern Nevada has since emerged as a dynamic force for Jewish life – with seven thriving centers and 17 Rabbis and Rebbetzins spanning the greater Las Vegas Valley.
Headquartered in Las Vegas, Chabad’s 4-acre central campus includes a Shul, Library, Hospitality Suites, the beautiful 65,000 square foot Robert Cohen Desert Torah Academy Educational Campus and Torah Tots Preschool, summer day camp, adult education center and state-of-the-art mikvah.
Five of the Harlig’s children are among the shluchim in the greater Las Vegas area, with Rabbi Levi and Chayala Wilhelm heading Chabad of Southwest, Rabbi Yosef and Binie Rivkin heading Chabad of Red Rock, Rabbi Motti and Mushkie Harlig heading YJP, Rabbi Levi and Nechama Harlig hearing Las Vegas Friendship Circle, and Rabbi Mendy and Gitty Harlig serving as shluchim at Chabad of Southern Nevada.
The proclamation was issued by Mayor Carolyn G. Goodman, along with members of the city council. They recognized the work of the shluchim over the past three decades and their impact on the community, and called on all citizens of the city to observe the “Harlig Family Day.”
The mayor and council issued the proclamation in the presence of the senior Harligs and a number of their children and grandchildren, and presented them with a framed copy.
The proclamation reads as follows:
Whereas; The Harlig Family of the Chabad of Southern Nevada and its affiliates have been a staple of the Southern Nevada community for over 30 years providing leadership, compassion, and a model for family principles based on the inspiration and teaching of the Chabad Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Schneerson; and
Whereas; The Harlig Family has been an esteemed pillar of the community, demonstrating unwavering commitment and leadership in promoting spiritual growth, education, and communal harmony; and
Whereas; The Harlig Family has played a pivotal role in the advancement of the Chabad of Southern Nevada selflessly devoting their time and energy to fostering a vibrant and inclusive Jewish community in Ward 1; and
Whereas; The principles held firm by the Harlig Family helped to establish the Friendship Circle which creates friendship in the lives of individuals with special needs and those facing isolation while providing an opportunity to become a contributing member of the community; and
