In a recent meeting with the Vaad Hakohol of Crown Heights, New York City officials announced that Kingston Avenue will be closed to through traffic between President Street and Eastern Parkway for three months over the summer. The closure is part of an $8 million infrastructure project, designated as Project SEK002376, overseen by the Department of Design and Construction (DDC) and the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP).
The project includes replacing aging sewer and water systems, reconstructing roadways, installing new sidewalks and curbs, and upgrading traffic signals and pedestrian ramps. While the water main on Kingston Avenue was last replaced in 2011, the drainage system still requires substantial upgrades. The improvements are intended to reduce flooding, enhance water distribution, and improve fire protection for the Crown Heights community.
During the closure, access will be limited to parking and deliveries only. Residents can expect temporary water shut-offs – advance notice will be given – as well as no parking and street closures during various phases of construction. These disruptions are expected to impact both traffic flow and local businesses.
Last year, pre-construction soil testing at the intersection of Kingston Avenue and President Street revealed elevated levels of lead in a sample taken from seven feet underground. The DDC has committed to safely removing and disposing of the contaminated soil in accordance with federal and state guidelines. Community air monitoring will take place throughout the excavation to ensure public safety.
To minimize disruption during the busy Tishrei season, the DDC has committed to completing this phase of construction before then. The Vaad Hakohol is actively coordinating with city agencies to monitor progress and address concerns from residents and business owners.
For updates on the project, residents can consult the NYC DOT Projects & Initiatives Map or call 311.
When will the work start?
The detour will likely be to NY Ave (for northbound driving and MTA buses). is going to change from slow-as-molasses to impossible, at least on weekdays.
Any vehicles detoured to Troy Ave. are in for a lot of aggravation too.
School bus schedules (day camps, etc.) will also be badly impacted.
But there seems to be no alternative other than a piecemeal fix over a longer time period, with lots of construction delays along Kingston Ave. then anyway.
Let’s see if it is TRULY done by Tishrei!
For the time being they can make Carroll Street two-way, and Albany and Brooklyn two way. That should help alleviate the congestion.
Will this affect the 3 train?
There’s enough space on New York Ave for 2 lanes, it seems that the last 2 (and mainly 1) block before Eastern Parkway (from President/Union) traffic tends to form only lane creating much of the already existing traffic on those blocks (aside the fact that EP light isn’t synced). If a dotted white line were painted to decide and create 2 lanes, I think it would help a lot.
