With profound sadness we inform you Leon and Rus (Christina Elvira) Oliwkowicz, parents of Mrs. Leah Fouhal of Chicago, were confirmed to have passed away in the tragic collapse of the Champlain Towers South Condo in Surfside, Florida.

Leon was 81 years old, and Rus was 74 years old.

The Champlain Towers South in Surfside collapsed on Wednesday night, 14 Tammuz, June 24. In the days since the collapse, nine people were confirmed to have been killed, and 152 remain unaccounted for.

On Sunday, 17 Tammuz, the Miami police department confirmed that Leon and Rus (Christina Elvira) Oliwkowicz were among those who were killed.

The couple were originally from Venezuela, and moved to Florida in recent years. In 2019, they donated a Torah to the Lubavitch Mesivta in Chicago, and it was welcomed in a grand procession down the city’s streets. Speaking in Yiddish at the event, Mr. Oliwkowicz expressed his satisfaction at finally having the opportunity to commission a Torah scroll in memory of his parents and blessed the assembled with health and long life.

They are survived by their daughter, Mrs. Leah Fouhal, who serves as the office administrator in the Lubavitch Mesivta in Chicago, Illinois.

The levaya will be held on Monday.
