Historian’s Polemical Work Tackles Historical Distortions
A polemical work by Rabbi Yehoshua Mondshine a”h sheds fresh light on the Torah translation and commentary project by Haskalah leaders Moses Mendelssohn and Shlomo Dubno, refuting false narratives that have been spread in recent decades.
Over the course of decades, Rabbi Yehoshua Mondshine a”h, a chossid, scholar, and prolific author, brought about a significant shift in the study of Chassidic history. In connection with his 11th yahrzeit, a new and compelling polemical work authored by him has been released.
This work, spanning close to 250 pages, sheds fresh light on the chain of events surrounding the episode of the Torah translation and commentary project initiated by leading figures of the Haskalah movement. It carefully traces the personalities and activities of Moses Mendelssohn and Shlomo Dubno during that period.
The polemical study was written in response to a series of scholarly publications that systematically blurred and distorted historical facts through a biased approach.
In this fascinating volume, Rabbi Mondshine addresses numerous chapters in Jewish history and in the development of Chassidus, including the attitude of the rabbonim of Vilna toward the Haskalah movement and its proponents; the life and story of Rabbi Menashe of Ilya; the Alter Rebbe’s response to the claims of the misnagdim; and the relationship of the Tzemach Tzedek to the Vilna Gaon.
These, along with many other illuminating studies, are presented generously in this final work, which Rabbi Mondshine wrote toward the end of his life, in defense of the honor of the chassidim and of Chassidus itself.
