In the midst of a relentless and brutal struggle against a ruthless adversary, where pain and suffering seem to overwhelm, the human heart yearns for comfort while simultaneously craving retribution. It is in these trying times that a prophetic verse from Devorim, at the conclusion of Shiras Ha’azinu, resounds with profound significance:

הַרְנִינוּ גוֹיִם עַמּוֹ כִּי דַם עֲבָדָיו יִקּוֹם וְנָקָם יָשִׁיב לְצָרָיו וְכִפֶּר אַדְמָתוֹ עַמּוֹ.

This verse promises that the nations of the world will praise and extol us, the people of Israel, for our unwavering devotion to the Almighty, even in the face of relentless hardship. It also assures that the Almighty Himself will grant us solace for our tribulations and exact vengeance upon our adversaries.

The niggun “HaRaninu” was made famous by Reb Peretz Chein, a fervent Chasid who dedicated his life to spreading Yiddishkeit with unwavering devotion, despite enduring severe hardships, including incarceration in a Soviet prison. Upon his liberation from Russia and subsequent arrival in the Holy Land, he traveled to the Rebbe and while there, he sang the niggun “HaRaninu,” a melody he cherished deeply, for the Rebbe, who, upon hearing it, requested that he teach this tune to all Chasidim.
