The Gaaguim project, dedicated to preserving and sharing Chabad niggunim, has released a moving rendition of the niggun Yeridas HaNeshama LaGuf, composed by R’ Shlomo of Tchashnik, a chossid of the Alter Rebbe and a renowned baal menagen. R’ Shlomo was the son of R’ Yisroel of Dubrovna and was counted among the leading musicians in the Alter Rebbe’s court.
The wordless niggun was later explained by R’ Eliyahu Leib Rivkin, a descendant of the composer, who described its three parts:
The first expresses the heavenly court informing the neshama that it must descend to this world.
The second conveys the neshama’s protest and pain.
The third reflects the final decree, accepting that “against your will you live,” and that the descent itself is for the sake of a greater ascent.
The niggun appears as Niggun 271 in Sefer HaNiggunim.
